Fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) is a key organic matter fraction in streams where it serves as a pivotal link between dissolved nutrients, microbial communities, and invertebrates. In spite of this importance, the biological dynamics of FPOM have rarely been investigated and virtually no information is available on FPOM decomposition in natural conditions. We generated FPOM of defined quality by feeding five different types of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) to shredding amphipods (Gammarus spp.). The diets included wood, filamentous algae, and stream-conditioned leaves of ash, alder, and oak. The FPOM generated by the feeding of Gammarus consisted of cohesive feces and CPOM fragments. Compared to the parent CPOM fraction, FPOM exhibited a significantly lower C/N ratio (< 33.9) and higher lignin content (> 409 mg/g C). Decomposition experiments in a natural stream demonstrated that FPOM was more refractory (k < 0.0015 day-1) than the corresponding CPOM fraction. Microbial respiration rates, determined as biological oxygen demand (BOD), were also significantly lower for FPOM. These results suggest that (i) FPOM retains more nutrients per unit weight than CPOM and (ii) low microbial respiration and slow decomposition are related to the poor carbon quality of FPOM.

According to the RCC, low ordered sites are small shaded streams where allochthonous inputs of CPOM are a necessary resource for consumers. As the river widens at mid-ordered sites, energy inputs should change. Ample sunlight should reach the bottom in these systems to support significant periphyton production. Additionally, the biological processing of CPOM (Coarse Particulate Organic Matter - larger than 1 mm) inputs at upstream sites is expected to result in the transport of large amounts of FPOM (Fine Particulate Organic Matter - smaller than 1 mm) to these downstream ecosystems. Plants should become more abundant at edges of the river with increasing river size, especially in lowland rivers where finer sediments have been deposited and facilitate rooting. The main channels likely have too much current and turbidity and a lack of substrate to support plants or periphyton. Phytoplankton should produce the only autochthonous inputs here, but photosynthetic rates will be limited due to turbidity and mixing. Thus, allochthonous inputs are expected to be the primary energy source for large rivers. This FPOM will come from both upstream sites via the decomposition process and through lateral inputs from floodplains. Fine Particulate Organic Matter
